Buying Guide for the Best Sampling Turntable

Choosing the right sampling turntable can be a bit overwhelming, but with the right knowledge, you can find the perfect one to suit your needs. A sampling turntable is a device used by DJs and music producers to play and manipulate vinyl records. It allows you to sample sounds from records and use them in your music production. When selecting a sampling turntable, it's important to consider several key specifications to ensure you get the best performance and features for your requirements.
Drive TypeThe drive type of a turntable refers to the mechanism that spins the platter. There are two main types: direct drive and belt drive. Direct drive turntables have a motor directly connected to the platter, providing quick start-up times and consistent speed, making them ideal for DJs who need to scratch and mix. Belt drive turntables use a belt to spin the platter, which can result in less motor noise and better sound quality, making them suitable for home listening and sampling. Choose direct drive if you need quick response and durability for DJing, or belt drive if you prioritize sound quality for sampling.
Platter MaterialThe platter is the part of the turntable that the record sits on. Platter materials can vary, with common options being aluminum, steel, and acrylic. Aluminum and steel platters are durable and provide good speed stability, making them suitable for DJing and general use. Acrylic platters are heavier and can reduce vibrations, offering better sound quality for critical listening and sampling. If you need a turntable for DJing or general use, aluminum or steel platters are a good choice. For high-fidelity sampling and listening, consider an acrylic platter.
Tonearm TypeThe tonearm is the part of the turntable that holds the cartridge and stylus, which read the grooves of the record. There are two main types of tonearms: straight and S-shaped. Straight tonearms are shorter and provide better tracking for scratching and DJing, while S-shaped tonearms offer better sound quality and are gentler on records, making them ideal for sampling and home listening. If you plan to use the turntable for DJing and scratching, a straight tonearm is preferable. For sampling and preserving record quality, an S-shaped tonearm is a better choice.
Cartridge and StylusThe cartridge and stylus are responsible for reading the grooves of the record and converting them into an audio signal. Cartridges can be either moving magnet (MM) or moving coil (MC). MM cartridges are more common, easier to replace, and generally more affordable, making them suitable for most users. MC cartridges offer higher fidelity and are preferred by audiophiles for critical listening and sampling. The stylus can be elliptical or spherical, with elliptical providing better sound quality and spherical being more durable for DJing. Choose an MM cartridge with an elliptical stylus for good sound quality and ease of use, or an MC cartridge for the highest fidelity in sampling.
Pitch ControlPitch control allows you to adjust the speed of the turntable, which is essential for beatmatching and mixing in DJing. It can also be useful for sampling, as it lets you change the pitch of the audio being sampled. Pitch control is typically measured in percentage, with common ranges being ±8%, ±10%, and ±20%. For DJing, a wider pitch range (±10% or ±20%) provides more flexibility in mixing. For sampling, a standard pitch range (±8%) is usually sufficient. Choose a turntable with pitch control that matches your needs for DJing or sampling.
USB ConnectivityUSB connectivity allows you to connect the turntable directly to a computer, making it easy to digitize your vinyl records and sample them in your music production software. This feature is particularly useful for producers who want to incorporate vinyl samples into their digital projects. If you plan to digitize your vinyl collection or use samples in your digital music production, look for a turntable with USB connectivity. If you only need the turntable for DJing or analog sampling, USB connectivity may not be necessary.
