Motor Type and PowerThe motor is the heart of an e-bike and determines how much help you get while pedaling. There are two main types: hub-drive motors, which are located in the wheel, and mid-drive motors, which are placed at the bike’s crank. Hub motors are generally simpler and work well for flat city rides, while mid-drive motors offer better performance for hill climbing and mixed terrain. Power is usually measured in watts; lower wattages (around 250W) suit gentle rides or city commuting, while higher wattages (500W and above) offer more strength for rougher routes or carrying heavier loads. If you plan to ride mostly on flat roads, a modest motor will suffice. But if you expect to tackle steep hills or carry extra weight, you'll appreciate a stronger motor.
Battery Capacity and RangeBattery capacity determines how far you can travel on a single charge. This is measured in watt-hours (Wh). Smaller batteries (around 250-350Wh) are lighter and usually enough for short city commutes, while larger batteries (500Wh or more) let you ride farther or use higher assist levels without recharging as often.
